How to make DIY Leather Fringe Earrings
Leather Fringe Earrings Supplies
There’s so many DIY blogs out there for anything and everything. I will show you and explain to you how I make mine! It’s super easy and you don’t need too many supplies. You will need:
- Soft, thin, pliable leather
- Ruler or straight edge or a square
- Sharp blade (rotary cutter works best)
- Hoop for stringing (this is where you can get SUPER creative and fun), any size, any shape, I typically use 30mm and 40mm diameter circle hoops
- Earring wires
- Pliers (needle nose or bent needle nose)
- Pierced ears!
-
Sharp shears
Before we begin
First and foremost, I use only lambskin leather for my fringe earrings. This is because it is so freaking soft and light. These statement earrings will not leave your lobes sore at the end of the day, that’s for sure!
I cut each and every strand for my fringe earrings one by one using a ruler and a sharp rotary cutter. I eyeball the thickness of each strand at about 1/16” to 1/8” wide. I like when they’re not all exactly the same thickness. It adds a little bit more uniqueness. When I’m cutting my strands, I like to make sure they’re close to 12” long or longer. Then the fringe itself is minimum 6” long when threaded onto the hoop. You can always cut them shorter, but you can’t grow them back!
I totally believe in the power of 3’s so my thick full fringe earrings will be on a 40mm hoop and have 9 or 12 strands on each hoop. This depends on the thickness of the leather I’m using. The smaller ones (30mm hoops) will have 6 or 9 strands. This said, you do you! Put as many (or as few) strands on as you want!
Step 1.
Step 2.
So after you’ve cut all of the strands you want to use, we will start stringing the pieces onto your hoops. You will fold the piece in half with the flesh side on the back,
Step 3.
loop the middle around the hoop and tuck the long ends through and pull snug.
Repeat this step with as many strands as you want to use on each hoop and then make your second one!
You can be creative and use more than one strand at a time, use more or less strands, or mix and match your colours. Mixing and matching is a good technique when you’re making earrings for a country’s flag, a sports team etc.
Step 4.
Once you have your desired strands on your hoop, take your pliers and earrings wire. Open up the bottom by twisting gently open with your pliers not quite halfway open.
Thread the hoop onto the earring wire making sure the flesh side is facing back. You want the shiny, most colourful side out! Then twist back, closing the earring wire around the hoop. You can clamp it gently shut with the pliers if needed
Step 5.
Place the two sides together, flesh sides together, run your fingers over as if you’re cutting hair and with your shears cut in a slight V shape at the ends.
And then voila! You’re done. Super easy peasy and super duper leather fringe earrings.
Have fun making your own!
